I will not waste time repeating what other reviewers have already said about plot, characters, or anything else. This is hands-down the most polished piece of literature I've had the pleasure to read in a long time. If any of you are tired of downloading books only to get sick of bad grammar and typographical errors and stop reading, then this is the book for you. I feel bad getting it for free, and I want to go back and pay for it retroactively.

Speculation Edmund Jorgensen 9780984749294 Books Reviews

It is always nice when a friend remembers you in their will isn’t it ?

But what if what they leave you is a choice ?

Remember that TV show The Money Or The Box.

What would you choose ?

I have always thought that I would go for the box.

Speculation is about being left that type of choice.

Buddy Johnston, Sothum (Stanley Riordan), and Andrew Wrangles have been friends since college.

Sothum, a genius in Andrew’s eyes who has not quite lived up to his full potential. Buddy, born to wealth with two bestsellers and the belief that life owed him everything. Andrew, both a student and teacher of philosophy every day of his life.

After Sothum’s death Andrew is left three boxes of papers from Sothum to sort through. He is also left with a choice. $10,000,000.00 or an envelope.

Andrew begins to search through the boxes hoping to find some clue as to what is in the envelope.

He is also searching for a clue to a bigger mystery. What happened to Buddy Johnston ? Buddy is missing presumed to have committed suicide after being ridiculed in the press. Andrew believes that Buddy would have found it too difficult to leave this world without a suicide note. During a conversation with Sothum about Buddy’s disappearance Andrew is connvinced that Sothum knows and is hiding something.

Has Sothum left a clue to the Buddy mystery, has he left behind the answer to a previously mind boggling philosophical question, or is Sothum being Sothum one last time and playing a prank on Andrew ?

There is no time limit on when Andrew must decide…but his wife Cheryl is definite about what she wants him to choose…and quickly.

I was completely fascinated from the first sentence. Edmund Jorgensen has crafted four believable, funny, quirky characters that meld together seamlessly in this book.

When it came to my eyes demanding to be closed, it was with sadness that I placed the book under the pillow to be picked up again at the earliest opportunity.

Seriously. I really hated my body’s need to sleep.
The back story of these four characters is weaved effortlessly through the book. The more you learn the more you want to know.
The pace builds as you get closer to the heart of the story.
Speculation did what few books do these days. It surprised me.
If there is one new author you need to discover…have a look at Edmund Jorgensen.
If there is space on your bookshelf for one more book…read Speculation.
While I will be lending this book to friends…it has found a permanent home to be taken out and reread.
While it's referred to in reviews as being a mystery, Edmund Jorgensen's Speculation does not particularly belong in this genre, and this unfortunate mislabeling confuses who may or may not enjoy reading it, handicapping what should have been easy success for an incredibly well-written book. In fact, the only reason I originally picked up this book was its promotional free download of its version. The summary presented on this page presented this "mystery" theme, as the narrator's friend, a genius by the nickname of Sothum, has recently passed away, leaving in his will a choice for the narrator to make between ten million dollars from Sothum's estate and an envelope with its contents undisclosed and undiscoverable unless chosen. Further complicating the decision is the disappearance of the narrator and Sothum's mutual friend, Buddy, who vanished without a trace some time before Sothum's death, as well as the frustrated impatience of the narrator's wife in waiting for him to make a decision that she sees as simple just take the money. This seems very much a mystery, asking what is in the envelope and what happened to Buddy, and can the former's answer reveal the latter's? However, this novel is in fact deeply philosophical and a terrific narration of what happens when a genius tries to tackle questions much bigger than himself, written in beautifully gripping language and anachronological order. It's a fantastic read for the appropriate audience, which is unfortunately not necessarily the audience it is marketed toward, putting it at an added disadvantage after already facing the obstacles of being self-published.

One of the most intriguing aspects of this book is its narrator's deep admiration of Sothum and Sothum's apparent genius, which colors his narration a great deal, constantly calling into question exactly how Sothum may have seen things. Though I've never looked much into philosophy myself, the narrator's love for Sothum and philosophy was so infectious that I found myself falling in love with the two, as well. Jorgensen uses elevated language and draws heavily on philosophical theory throughout, appropriate for the narrator's profession as a professor of philosophy. As Emily Summer, an online blogger pointed out in her own review, despite these references, the story remains easy to follow, even for someone such as myself who lacks any previous instruction in philosophy. An unexpected switch in narration later in the story reveals a great wealth of information that had, in its previous absence, begun to itch at me. This sudden shift was immensely satisfying to read through, especially due to its depth and thoroughness. All questions which were raised in the first half of the novel are neatly answered, most all loose ends tied up aside from those "just let it be" moments, and the end of the novel comes not too soon nor too late. This is exactly the type of book for an audience looking for thought-provoking questions, inspired language, and a look into what the mind of a genius might be like, though not necessarily an audience interested in the solving of a mystery.

Most of the criticism that I've encountered directed toward this book was due to its being called a mystery while bearing little resemblance to other mystery literature. It has little going for it in the way of uncovering clues, and far more of the narrator reflecting on his shared past with Sothum and Buddy, describing his relationships with the two, and the denouement is markedly different from one you might expect from a typical mystery. In Speculation, its resolution all comes in a large wave of information contained in three chapters toward the end, a story all its own with added complexity that would be scarcely hinted at beforehand. Joe Ponepinto posted on the literary review website "The Los Angeles Review" described one of the possible flaws of this book as being "heavy on backstory and short on forward momentum," though adding "even these aspects of the book could be considered accurate reflections of the philosopher's world." This supposed flaw is more dependent on the tastes of the reader, however, and not necessarily a reflection of anything lacking from the author. The most apparent flaw I took note of was that it is very cerebral and and very different from what is popular in current world of popular literature, but again this is more of a reflection on the taste of its readership. The second flaw was a rather nit-picky one I didn't pick up on the narrator's name very easily or early on, and because it's rarely referenced I barely remembered it. Though perhaps this assisted in immersing myself in the story and imagining my being in place of the narrator, whose name happens to be Andrew (or Andy, as he is called by Sothum).

Overall, I highly recommend this book, especially if you are looking for something that will make you think and delight you. I had a very difficult time putting it down, and it's a serious page-turner.
