Les arcanes du chaos sets the standard for the conspiracy-theory thriller genre.

Plotwise, it follows the standard Dan Brown conspiracist formula: relatively ordinary person gets caught up in ancient conspiracies, accompanied by a companion who is more than they seem, etc. etc. etc. What sets Chattam's work apart is the ambiguity and how much more fully it is rooted in real-life. Chattam also has an advantage in my mind because he doesn't have Dan Brown's unfortunate habit of insisting everything in his books is true.

While Dan Brown takes the trappings of whatever religious or political issue he is passionate about at the moment, this book is firmly established in the modern political arena. It's take on information-age conspiracies are on par with William Gibson's Spook Country. The plot is entirely character driven, even when those characters aren't visible in the text.

There are a couple of oversights: Karl Rove is referred to as "Cari Rove" at one point, and there are some anachronisms (which I can't reveal without spoiling a massive lategame plot twist), but overall it's a solid adventure.
